Field Trips at MBS…..Why???
The question has been asked, “Why do you do field trips at a restaurant? Well, why not? No other restaurant in the state of Michigan,or really any where in the country offers the educational opportunities that we have.
It began with my own daughters. They were quite enthusiastic about the environmental issues theywere learning about in school. They had an advantage over their classmates-not only could they read about new and exciting green initiatives, they had our restaurant where they could see and touch things as well. Wouldn’t it be great if all kids could have this hands-on approach? And so, field trips at MBS were born!
I quickly got my wife, a former public school teacher, involved in the process. Together, we developed a field trip to teach kids about our “scientific laboratory.” On a field trip to MBS, students learn about trombe walls, rain water collection and re-use, graywater re-use, on site bio-digester, sustainable organic farming, green building materials, solar panels, and geo-thermal heating and cooling (just to name a few!).
We currently have a program in place with our local school district, Rochester Community Schools. We workedwith RCS to make sure our field trips match their environmental science curriculumobjectives. In our opinion, it’s very important for all members of a communityto work together, including schools and local businesses. Together, we make ourcommunity a great place to be! We are also hosting students from other area schools, scout troops, and environmental clubs. If you’re looking for a unique, hands-on way to teach kids about being green, check us out!
So, why do we have fieldtrips here at Mind, Body and Spirits? When we have all this to offer, alongwith the joy teaching brings, WHY NOT?
